When to Replace Pod Shoes
Regular inspection and timely replacement of pod shoes is critical to prevent damage to more expensive components. Replace your pod shoes when:
-
Shoes No Longer Extend Above Pod Surface - When pushed against the pod end, shoes should extend above the pod surface
-
Wear Indicators Are Reached - Built-in wear marks indicate when replacement is needed
-
Shoes Are Worn Below Pod Level - If shoes wear below the pod surface, the pod itself will start rubbing on the pool floor
-
Material Becomes Hard or Brittle - Hardened shoes lose traction and cleaning efficiency
-
Cleaner Loses Traction - Difficulty climbing walls or reduced movement indicates worn shoes
-
Cleaner Moves Too Slowly - Excessive shoe wear can reduce cleaner speed and coverage
Why Timely Replacement Matters
-
Prevents Pod Damage - Worn shoes expose pods to direct pool surface contact, causing expensive pod wear
-
Maintains Cleaning Performance - Fresh shoes provide proper traction for efficient pool coverage
-
Protects Other Components - Proper shoes reduce stress on A-frames, turbines, and bearings
-
Extends Cleaner Lifespan - Regular shoe replacement is the most cost-effective maintenance task
Installation Instructions
- Disconnect cleaner from hose (pull straight off to avoid breaking internal gears)
- Turn cleaner upside down to access pod shoes
- Insert flathead screwdriver between shoe and pod
- Gently pry old shoe off the pod mounting pins
- Dip new shoe in water for lubrication
- Align the two mounting pins with the two holes in the pod (note: holes are different sizes for proper orientation)
- Press firmly until shoe snaps into place
- Repeat for remaining three shoes
- Reconnect cleaner to hose and test operation
Maintenance Tips
- Inspect shoes monthly during pool season
- Replace all four shoes at the same time for balanced performance
- Never allow shoes to wear down to the pod surface
- Consider replacing shoes annually as preventive maintenance
- Check shoes more frequently if pool has very rough surfaces
- When replacing shoes, also inspect wings, flaps, and A-frames for wear
Important Notes
-
Surface Type Matters: These shoes are specifically for concrete and gunite pools. Different shoes (vinyl/fiberglass version) are required for vinyl liner and fiberglass pools
-
Replace Before Complete Wear: Do not wait until shoes are completely worn - this will damage pods which are much more expensive to replace
-
Complete Set Required: Always replace all four shoes together to maintain balanced cleaner operation
Tune-Up Kit Option
If your cleaner requires multiple worn parts, consider the Hayward Navigator/Pool Vac Tune-Up Kit (AXW350 for concrete pools) which includes:
- 4 pod shoes (concrete version)
- 2 wings
- 2 flaps (front and rear)
- Screwdriver
- Cleaning brush
- Maintenance guide
Note: Verify your pool surface type before ordering. These AXV414P shoes are for concrete and gunite pools only. For vinyl liner or fiberglass pools, order the appropriate vinyl/fiberglass shoe model.
